Young Fathers: Tape One (2013)

Genres: abstract hip hop, experimental hip hop, British hip hop.

Throughout the entire project we get great beats. Phenomenal, well executed experimental elements; unique instrumentation and African+Caribbean influences which are paired well with more subtle drum patterns to create a tape with no beats below b tier. Like listen to the beats on Rumbling, Remains and Dar-Eh. Insane. “Romance” also samples the legendary Pete Tosh, paying full respect through the medium of a truly beautiful flip and usage of the original track.

The flows and melodies displayed on this project are well worth being mentioned, the chant-singing on Deadline is great, the rapping on Sister and Rumbling are stand outs and the melodies on Romance and hook on Remains are also amazing.

“Take the cash, looks don’t last, tryna fit a lifetime into an hour glass” rolls into a beautifully written and delivered hook on remains. There’s lots of empowering one liners such as “waiting to be rich, rip it to pieces” as well as Alloysius and Kayus reflecting on the effect their countries have on them despite leaving them.
